In the dark ages "scholars" debated things like how many angles could sit on a pin, or some such. And then the Enlightenment of the Renaissance arrived. Scholars discovered that through scientific investigation things around them could be explained by universal principles. Most importantly by understanding phenomena predictions could be made about other phenomena. An arch in a door become a Cathedral and most agreed that things got better. Others didn't care but for others the quest to understand burns brightly. Some are entertained by striving to create a surface where each wood cell is perfectly cleaved. Others are entertained by understanding what it takes to cleave these cells with the possible goal of cleaving them better. Some won't care if there is a better way. Others could make a market from the information.
