“What is it about chromium that seems to get along so well with wood?”

I like Phil’s hypothesis, namely, that the M4 is tending toward an exposed aggregate finish at the nano level; while the V11 chromium carbides are wearing with the matrix, with the edge remaining compact. I also like his solution: SEM photos to actually see what has happened, although the V11 may have been taken 100 feet too far to reveal why it was slick in the wood.
