I completely get it. I don't mind sharpening at all in the middle of a session when I'm doing a lot of planing.

If I am fitting something later and need to take off 10 or 20 feet of shavings and the plane is on the edge of not lifting the shaving, it just doesn't feel like a time that I want to sharpen a plane, and I'll end up doing the same as you did - pick up another plane.

Fortunately, the cap iron generally prevents damage if a plane is dull vs. a without scenario where you might be tempted to advance the iron until you get a cut.
