I recently planed hundreds of lineal feet of teak using high speed steel knives and when I looked at the worn knives I was surprised that edges so blunt were still able to remove wood. The need for sharpness in a hand plane is orders of magnitude higher.

When sharpening 3V with one micron diamond I don't find the wire edge to be that persistent.
