The kings are happy under their own weight and either rasp a blade or create a rolling slurry. Since they like soaking, affixing them to a base (like the bester) tends to be temporary.
I think you'll like both stones. The king works like a soft natural stone and the shapton works like a hard natural stone on steroids (it will load with certain HSS, though - and king will be slow to cut with that type of steel, leading us back to what Bill and Steve have often advocated - silicon carbide is a good minimum and diamonds are even better).
