Dave, thanks for this clear and helpful answer…all very interesting.I think this is all very useful and relevant. I know that some of the bigger companies do stuff like building a planing machine to plane MDF (to test blade longevity). I totally get why they'd do that, and it's probably useful for what you called "shaving lifters," but for me the question of surface quality is so much more relevant. I'm pleasantly surprised to see that plain HC steel holds its own in that regard.
