Yes, starrett. The only two O1 steels I've used are starrett and precision presco. Both are good in my experience. I'm wary of unbranded stuff just because the standard isn't that tight - like you say.

W1 is even worse. Most manufacturers make something in a narrow range, but the standard itself is very loose, so I bought 1095 bar stock instead only to see that the knife makers say generally finding the right manufacturer to get a tight spec on W1 is better. In their words, it's usually made cleaner and to a higher standard than 1095. (The range I saw on one page was 0.6-1.3% carbon(!!)).

Not sure how much 0.2% adds, but the 2.75% in 3V must add a LOT the way it sharpens.
