Subject:
Note on O-1

Wiley Horne
David,

Am much enjoying poring over your observations. Do your documentary photos jibe with your qualitative look and feel impressions? Seems to me they do.

I looked up ‘O-1’ composition, and it turns out there is no definitive O-1. There are numerous standards (about 30), and a like number of makers’ formulas. They vary some as to Cr and W (tungsten) percentages, within the range of 0.4 to 0.7%. But the biggest difference seems to be in vanadium presence and amount. Some of the standards do not include V, and others specify up to 0.3%.

Starrett quotes 0.2%; Uddeholm 0.12%, Hudson quotes 0 (zero), Ellwood 0.3%. And so on. Quite a few show no V.

Well, this may be absurd nitpicking. But I mention this because vanadium punches above its weight—it has an effect on abrasive resistance outsize to its weight in the formula.

Are you using Starrett?
