Paul Bos had a great reputation with the knife makers, but the real expertise in heat treating tool steel is the TOOL and DIE makers. They make parts for auto and many other industries and THEY all have great QC data on how long parts last, much better objective data than knife makers.

The M4 iron was heat treated by Mid South Metalurgical outside of Nashville. They heat treat parts for the auto industry and others in the southeast. If memory serves me correctly the M4 iron was heat treated to give an effective Rockwell hardness of 64 and cyro treated also.
