Sandpaper and other abrasives were apparently cost prohibitive, or at least that's the conjecture. If it hadn't been, who knows?
It was around.
Maybe the people who used it were hacks, or maybe only the best shops producing the finest furniture could even afford it. I don't know. If it really was cost prohibitive, then it's a fairly easy logical assumption that it was used in shops who could recover its cost in the products sold.
Food for thought perhaps.
