In 1980 I was restoring an 18th century blacksmith shop that had burned and I retrieved a large Nicholson file that lost its temper in the fire. I made a large skew chisel for turning from the file. I shaped the skew end and ground down the teeth somewhat, then took it to a blacksmith for quenching. He wanted to temper it also, but I did not trust him, so I tempered it in a kitchen oven. I have used it for many years now.
