Double iron positioning?

Have you thought about what to do about chipbreaker positioning—retracted vs. in-play? I ask this because a close setting changes the forces acting on the blade edge. Indeed, Prof. Kato was trying to find out, among other things, the extent to which a close chipbreaker had a self-sharpening effect, as it created a slight concavity just above the cutting edge. Forgot what he found out.
