Strangest thing planed? Sterling Silver & GoldResponse To:
strangest thing you've planed? () John Aniano in Central NJ
When I mate a musical instrument bow stick to its ebony frog, the latter is lined with an 0.008" thick annealled sterling silver underslide. I plane the stick, ebony and silver together to make a uniform face on both sides of the bow. I'm basically planing the edge of the silver with my high angle scraping planes. I finish all with files and SiC sandpaper from 400 to 2500 grit.
For gold mounted bows, the underslide is 14 or 18kt annealed gold and it is planed just like the silver.
I've also planed aluminum, but John in NM already beat me to that one!
