I didn't do too much of that, but I tested the limits of good taste on how low a bevel could be, and then did try the 3 pound hammer after seeing an actual professional do it (actually, I think it was a short handled 6 pound hammer in the hands of a dai maker named hisao. He was taking huge amounts of macassar ebony out of a dai, and not subtly. I didn't find anything remotely similar to that to work well and gave up quickly. That was part of the story of how I got the imai timberframing chisel to fail - a 3 pound hammer. I would've given it a pass if a $15 vintage US timber framing chisel hadn't held up better in the same task with the same hammer)
