Yes on all of that. Most of what we do with western planes isn't necessary to get the five tens you're talking about. Same with Japanese, though the super tight fitting may allow a much heavier cut without anything rattling around or coming loose.

I'm glad I didn't take this hobby up 40 years ago. IF it had been hard to find hand tool related stuff, I'd have just quit it entirely.
