Subject:
Cost of chisels

Warren in Lancaster, PA
Back in 1790 a set of 16 chisels were worth less than a bushel of wheat. Handmade chisels with real bolsters and nice tangs and nicely tapered blades. A craftsman could buy a chisel for not much more than an hour's wages.

This week a bushel of wheat cost $4.37. What is shocking is not how low the Chinese chisels are but how high the price can be for chisels that aren't even forged.
