I have some Marples chisels from 35 and 40 years ago. They are certainly adequate for professional work.

My cast steel chisels from early 1800's can make hundreds of end grain cuts on the dreaded Jarrah and still pare end grain quite nicely. We have some hard woods here in Pennsylvania also, but we generally don't use them for cabinetmaking.
