I think a modern machine built stool may fail in that area but this is built to withstand such pressures. The tenons were kiln dried as dry as possible and tightly fitted into green mortises. The joints lock tighter. That is one of the advantages of the windsor chair design. Also,not noticeable in the picture,the leg tenons are tapered and wedged from the top giving even more strength to the design.
