I don't think just buying the right hand plane will do it. You will also need to learn how to set it properly. I would first get garrett wades handplane book and read up on it . Then you will have the knowledge to decide which plane you need. Scrapers are a good way of taming rough grain. Also sanding can get you a decent surface on difficult grain if done correctly.
