Turning greenResponse To:
Re: wood drying/checking () Warren in Lancaster, PA
Turning a green blank for a chair leg (a cylinder) is helpful; it reduces the bulk of the billet and hastens drying. In historical times roughing out a wet blank was faster than roughing a dry blank. However turning a Windsor chair leg green exposes end grain in many places and makes these areas vulnerable to more rapid drying and end checking.
