A #4 is a pretty good plane for a starter. However I think the 14" union plane which sounds like a jack plane size would be a far more useful tool. I suggest you get both,tune them up and explore. You will discover what you need them for once you learn how they work. I use a jack plane for preparing seat blanks out of rough pine. The number four is a finishing plane. I don't use mine much in windsor chair building.
