No 4 Plane question and....

Barry Irby
I normally post on the corded tool side and I posted these questions there, but was sent here for further enlightenment.

I have a chance to buy two planes. One is a Stanley/Bailey No 4. In barn find condition. What is this plane for and is it a good one to have for a newbie to hand planes? What does one do with a Smoother?

The other one is a Union that is 14" long with hardly any other markings. The knob is missing. Would this make a good plane for a shooting board? Other uses?

What about the steel in the irons of these two planes?

Tell me what I need to know
