Seaton chiselsResponse To:
Re: A lands question for Rob Lee..... () Warren in Lancaster, PA
The chisels in the Seaton chest were purchased in 1796 and the chest was built in early 1797. I think it reasonable to assume that the chisels were used to make the dovetails on the chest and the bank of drawers inside.
There are 48 chisels in the chest:
8 mortise chisels
7 heavy socket chisels
33 firmer chisels
There are no bevelled firmer chisels in the chest, no fishtail chisels, and no skew chisels. I don't find these things necessary for making dovetails.
