Unfortunately William, if you are making skinny tails - such as 1/8" or 3/16" bases - then sharp lands are necessary to avoid bruising the faces. These are too narrow to skew a chisel. It is a different story with wide dovetails, where the chisel may be skewed into the socket wall. Pins are square-sided, and one can use any chisel.
Roger, it is a 30 second task to dull the lands after the first inch. I would rather it was this way that the alternative - having to reduce the lands by grinding. I think that the reference to the custom Koyamaichi was in regard to my own, which Mr Koyama ground for me. Apparently (according to Stu, who liaised on my behalf), Mr K was unaware of the need for this - the Japanese dovetails (such as on full blind mitred corners) are typically quite wide.
