I could've been a lot more brief and less harsh, band should have.
The case here about the sharpening is still true, though. The website, or two oilstones, or whatever else ....They are functionally superior to all of the modern techniques. Both with flat tools, and especially when you get away from flat tools into gouges, nickers, etc. All of that stuff is relatively simple with a single method.
To sharpen with speed and be able to do it with speed the next cycle, we are looking to prevent damage and remove only what we need to. Once you get to there, things move a lot faster. It just takes a month or so to perfect the skill and learn the feel of the stone.
It's worth troubling through the learning curve and finding out why a typical washita stone has far more miles on it than the average synthetic vintage bench hone.
As to why Norton won't mine and cut, I guess they can't sell a skill based stone to a mostly unskilled market. If Dan kirchner had access to the perryn formation, stones would be pouring out of it. Norton has become hit or miss with their fine Arkansas stones, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them stop those, too.
Aside from that, if someone has ever gotten a tool from me and found it to be dull or poorly prepared, I'd be surprised, but I'm sure open to honest criticism. I lay a washita edge on all of those tools before they go out the door.
