I would be very surprised if someone gave you a CBN plane for a 1, 3 and 5 year period and you could tell that it was different than diamonds.

I have two plates that are all mono diamonds. One is DMT (or more accurately, I have two of each), and the other is atoma. The atoma plate has about 10x the use of the DMT and still works faster, even though it's technically finer. If Atoma did the same thing with CBN as they do with diamonds, I'm sure their plate would still outlast a duosharp.

Diamond loss and plating loss are a far bigger problem than wear.

No clue how material toughness plays into these, either, because it's not as if all diamonds are 70k knoop and all CBN is 45k. There are versions of CBN that are harder than typical diamonds, and arrangements of bonds in diamonds that make super hard diamonds (unlikely we see those - not sure about CBN).

At any rate, I'm going to have to hear stories about the CBN that wears down quickly before I think it's a big issue. I haven't got a clue what's made my atoma slower, but I'd imagine there may have been some initial diamond loss in the peaks. It still cuts very deeply with pressure. Or I should say both do, I have two and have lost track of which is which. AT one point, I saved one for stones, but I like them better once they've lost the initial tooth.

Still, on the CBN planes, it's not CBN that I'd be concerned about, it's flatness and the quality of attachment to the plate - as well as consistency of CBN if one has a choice. I already saw the damage a couple of stray large diamonds can do to a watch face.
