Why grind unhardened steel on CBN?Response To:

The principal benefit of CBN is that it efficiently grinds hardened metals, without releasing excessive heat that might detemper them.
If you're grinding normalized/annealed O1 then it's a "don't care" on both counts: You can get the part red-hot without damaging it (anything below 1300F is OK), and it will grind easily on conventional abrasives like AlOx.
I use a conventional wheel or belt grinder for that. While CBN load-up is easily fixed (as you say, just grind something hard) *any* grinding puts at least a little wear on the wheel, and there's no reason to do that for soft steel.
