I don't think it was stearated. IIRC, you can usually see the coating for stearated paper while looking at the grains, like they're in a pool of stuff. It's possible that it was the adhesive that held the paper on.

I have to admit I really don't like much of anything else for stones other than diamond hones. Everything else is a bit of a mess. If a stone is bad enough, I take a belt sander outside and work the bulk of the bad parts off with the idler on the sander. (the only stones bad enough for that are stones I've bought and not yet used).
