Diamond plates...... ()

apologies, I got both of those confused.

I have used the bench stones, dia flat, dia sharp and the duosharp. From time to time, the diasharps have flatness issues, but the duosharps, dia flat and bench stones do not (the duos and bench stones are plastic, I guess it's easier to get flat stock moulding it).

The plastic "bench stones" are expensive for what they are, but I found the duosharps fine to use.

I have yet to find a diamond hone made in china that's flat from hone to hone. That includes the $50 plates that come from bestsharpening stones (4 thousandths hollow for both that I have, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but you will find that it can create a problem if you prepare a cap iron and iron on it), as well as the gaggle of stones that are about $20 for a two-sided stone.

I understand the iwood japanese hone can also be a bit out of flat (according to stu's stuff), and the extremely expensive apparently chinese-made trend plate that some of the retailers sell has a poor flatness record on the shaving forum. trend's flatness quote is per inch, so it's relatively meaningless for the plate.

I didn't have the ability to measure the diasharp's flatness the last I used one. If you can't get a 1 1/2 thou feeler through something, it's fine. If you can get a sheet of paper through the center of a diamond hone, it may present problems.

Apologies for confusing the diasharp and diaflat. Based on what I've seen of the lower cost DMTs, though, I'd stick with the plastic ones if flatness counts, but I'd still defer back to atoma because one atoma will last as long as about 10 duosharps. I blew out my first duosharp in about a year. Each chinese equivalent ("DMD" brand, etc), about the same. I have two atomas that have been used very heavily and both are still fine and not missing any significant patches.
