You've only "wasted money on earlier purchases" if you didn't learn anything, or don't consider knowledge to be valuable.

IMO they're a reasonable set for the OP's stated current objectives. Those objectives may evolve, and he may replace them as a result, but that's life.

I have a few of them that I converted to skews, and they're fine. Make sure to lightly sand the conical part that goes into the socket. They come finished, and you you'll have trouble getting the handles to stay put unless you fix that.
