Re: Stanley...anyone care to comment?

There's relatively little about using the double iron with japanese planes. Odate talks about it, but I wasn't around for the first wave of japanese stuff in the 80s.

(That's an entirely different thing than whether or not the japanese use them, but what's written in English tends to focus more on the smoothing side of the operation and the final smoothing at that. I'm sure the use of the cap in dimensioning is pretty common over there, it reduces labor and it's hard to avoid something when it's easier).

It was only getting into dimensioning that stuffed me toward putting the cap iron back in those planes. I don't and didn't really buy much in terms of texts in 2012, I just figured warren was credible and limited myself to stanley planes for two weeks and figured out how to use the cap iron. It took a lot less than two weeks, but by the end of two weeks (maybe by the end of one) I had gotten used to what useful settings looked like and the whole thing of changing how the cap iron is set from time to time went away.
