Supersurfacers are industrial size handplanes; And being industrial they have to work, so have had a lot of thought put into understanding the mechanics involved in cutting.
Like handplanes they have a knife and a chipbreaker (back-knife)
Marunaka have been making supersurfacers since the 70's and they understood chipbreaker settings and apparently a lot more. The K/K video only covered chipbreakers, and to understand planing you need to consider what wasn't on the video as well.
But to those that keep saying this was "lost" I will tell you it may have been lost to you, and you can make whatever excuse you want for that, but it was always knowledge that was known and available in this brilliant age of information.
I got my first supersurfacer probably 25 years ago and the instruction for knife setting are quite detailed and specific as you will see below.
So i will again post the supersufacer set-up diagrams for those that may be interested.
If anyone has any questions and would like more information i will be more than happy to help.
Below is the knife/ chipbreaker setting gauge for precision setting the chipbreaker setback.
And a video ;https://youtu.be/eaClhzlpc_0
And yes they do cut hardwoods;
Birdseye Maple and baked Birdseye Maple
And you can cut some pretty thin shavings if you want to have some fun;
