Last night I removed old hardware and installed new deadbolt and lockset in a door that is pretty old. The wood was chocolate brown on exposed, or revealed, surfaces. When I drilled or bored, it was distinctly red, and milled nicely.
The old lock was fully mortised. Took a very long time to remove, since I was focused on avoiding damage to the door. I found the broken end of an old skeleton key in the lock when I finally got it out.
Anyway, the wood reminded me of redwood, but I wonder if mahogany is more likely? Any guesses? The resident told me the house is "very old, it had belonged to my Godparents ". This lady is elderly, although I don't know her age.
The whole job was fascinating. I'd never done anything with a mortise lock before.
