Subject:
lighting is everything *PIC*

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
On the Nikon we used before the lab got the metallurgy scope we had all sorts of lighting options and none were good for lighting metal. Variables in lighting will enable one to see anything they want to imagine at the edge because of reflections and refraction. The features that could be reliably seen were detected with a good 10X lens. But the scope enabled measurement to be made and images recorded.

For example, this picture shows a typical used edge from a Sorby chisel taken with the old scope in best we could do mode (this image is done on a $35K Nikon). One can see the deformation but reflections prevent the resolution seen in my earlier picture. You can see that the edge is deformed with a good 10X lens.

As an aside this is the kind of "wear" typical of a chisel that has not been hardened optimally.
