Subject:
What is a "Start"

david weaver
I've noticed the word "start" in a lot of old catalogs, and it's in reference to wooden planes.

In context, it would be something like "our planes are all made with steel starts" or "all include lignum vitae starts".

What is a start? I should know this if I make planes, but I am intellectually lazy when it comes to planes - and I don't install strike buttons because I always tap the irons (so I'm suggesting I think it's probably a strike button, but not sure if it means top of the plane or back or both - presumably just top).
