Subject:
microscope examination *PIC*

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
I have considerable experience photographing edges. It is not easy even though I have had access to a well equipped industrial microscope lab. Lighting is everything and there are a lot of ways to do it.

The lab acquired a scope for imaging metal specimens and that was a great leap forward.

Other than being able to measure features I don't gain a lot with the microscope over a high quality 10X lens for routine edge assessment. There is a substantial difference between a quality 10X lens and one that is cheap.

The image is of an A2 TiN coated blade after a planing test in maple. The silver is where the TiN has worn off the edge. This picture is an example of what can be done with a microscope set up for metal examination. Even a $30K Nikon scope without these features produced images greatly inferior.
