Sorry for the confusion. I read Cr-Mo where I should have read Cr-Mn.

Mn, manganese is the stuff you find for example in O1 to slow down the quench time, so you can harden it in oil instead of water.

Mo, Molybdenum is one of the wear resistant alloys in steel. It makes heat resistant carbides, it helps to avoid oxidation of the iron in some stainless steels. It is used in high speed steels, like M2.

Chrome Moly is used often in tools like spanners.
