I feel that waiting for the plane to stop cutting is bad policy. The blade is very dull at that point and takes quite a heavy amount if grinding to remove the wear. At a bare minimum I would cut that time in half. This is a touch and sense, when you feel the plane is beginning to require force then it is time to sharpen.

Beyond that, you should be sharpening prior to critical work like planing over end grain (even with a chamfer). Or planing delicate surfaces.

Sharp is a factor in minimizing tear out.
