Do you have a big budget, and can buy new, or do you want to spend a lot of time tuning up old stuff. If you have a decently well equipped shop, or access to some tools, one can make one's own planes rather quickly and get a product at least as good as what is sold for hundreds of dollars. 45 minute ought to get you cutting.
The three most useful planes are a bench plane like a Lie nielsen number 4, a jointer, and a blcok plane. P
