I agree, that's a very good idea. I don't have a L-N #60-1/2 either, but I do have their large shoulder plane and their skew block plane.

Before you throw in the towel, you might want to ask L-N if they will machine some custom finger grips in a 60-1/2 for you. They have always been quite accommodating of minor custom modifications. They put a nicker in my #140 for me before it was a standard option.
