Bill, picking up on Ellis's point about the hole in the centre, I think one way to eliminate the need for any disguising work later, an apparently minor task, might be to temporarily stick down a small square of thin plywood (or similar), 1.5 - 3 mm thick, over the centre spot. Work the lines and berries, then lift off the plywood, clean any adhesive off the walnut (double sided tape maybe, or a spot or two of PVA) and polish up. Slainte.
