Its the middle of the night....my shoulder is bothering me (rotator cuff they say)....so I'll try to add some comment.....and then get back to bed.

I built my board last year before I ever thought I'd get a dedicated shooting plane....I borrowed design elements from Derek and Tico Vogt and incorporated some things of my own.

The LV and LN 51s have a 20° skewed blade.....the board (as it turns out) reduces that apparent skew by 4° or 5° depending on the ramp.....which leaves an apparent skew of 15° or 16°.....which is still effective and is not the end of the world.....a flat board might be "better" for a type 51 which would then have a full 20° apparent skew. Someone will have to build a reverse ramped board to explore benefits of apparent skew angles above 20°.

Whatever the configuration of your board, you definitely want that "running fence" (a D. Cohen feature).....makes a tremendous difference.

You also want regular fences that can be adjusted to 90° or 45° (Cohen) and that have an adjustable sub-fence that can be moved to give support to stock and help reduce "spelching" (T. Vogt).

I also agree with Derek that a small chamfer on the back edge of boards to be shot will reduce/eliminate break out.

I'm liking that LV shooting plane....it does its job. You'll need a good board for it as well.....the plane and the board are partners.....its the combination that makes for success.
