I too have found that Derek tends to pick the LV product as the winner of his comparison tests, and I often don't agree with his reasoning for doing so.
Yes, there is no question that he has an affinity for LV tools. Part of this is undoubtedly his affinity for fine tools in general, and part is the fact taht LV seems to be the maker doing the most original design among major makers. And like you, I don't always agree with his rationale or conclusions, but the important thing to me is that he states that rationale, so I have what I need to evaluate his conclusions.

I also would agree that this particular article went off on a bit of a tangent in spending so much time discussing the edge retention of the steels.
We'll have to agree to disagree there. I think his comments on the steel were in context. And my take-away from the article is that the ideal combination would be the LN 51 with a LV replacement blade.

I can even see where some discussion of the ability of the planes to cut a square edge would have been merited. Just as a miter saw with a curved blade or unbalanced set would not cut true, these shooting planes could have problems that would prevent them from cutting a square edge. For example, the two soles could be non-perpendicular to one another, or the soles could be non-flat.
No question that it would be extremely hard to get a dependably square end when shooting with this plane

And it would be hard to get square in the other direction with this plane

But I think any reader of Derek's blog is probably confident enough of LV's design expertise to know these issues (on a subtler scale) will not be a problem.
