Hi Charles,

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here, and believe that your intent is to keep yourself or the rest of us from 'being had.' But you've already been had: Someone has convinced you that you understood how these tools work. Or at least, well enough to pose intelligent questions.

Because this is a community, I'll make the assumption that you're here to learn. So, read on:

---

The functionality of a shooting plane, used with a shooting board, is analogous to that of a miter saw, used with a miter box: The squareness of the cut is not determined by the saw, but by the miter box. The teeth on the saw could be made out of broken glass and old beaver teeth, and the cut would still be square, as long as the guides were in good order.

The fence on a shooting board sits precisely at 90 degrees to a track. The wood is held against the fence, the plane runs in the track. As long as the fence is accurate, and as long as the wood is securely held against that fence, the blade will pass through the wood at a 90 degree angle, as determined by the track. The plane is nothing more than a blade holding fixture, it doesn't determine the direction of travel. That's what the shooting board is for, and it's why it's important that it be well made.

Even if the blade were hammered out of a trash can lid, and fastened to a plane body made of squirrel parts, the cut would still be at 90 degrees, provided the shooting board were in good order. But, the quality of the cut would suffer.

The whole point of a shooting board is to guide the plane to cut at an accurate angle. And, the whole point of buying a dedicated shooting plane is to make sure that the quality of that cut is good. So Derek's focus on the factors contributing to the quality of that cut, is appropriate.

I must confess, now that it's almost midnight, I begin to wonder if I've been had, and you're simply trying to establish your own credentials for the online trolling community. I simply see no other motive for going after Derek on as many fronts as you have. But, again, for the sake of being polite, I'll make the assumption that you don't actually mean to do harm; maybe you're just young and ignorant, misinformed, or possessed of an overabundance of gumption. So, I'll try to enlighten you again.

You've been whining and moaning for the better part of the day because You Don't Know What You're Talking About. You've gone after Derek to try to make your point, and to show us all just how much you really know. And while you've done a convincing job of that, it's not working in your favor.
