Yes, really. I am quite confident that anyone here who has ever used a shooting board could easily set up ANY plane with perpendicular (or even nearly perpendicular) side and bottom to create a square end on a board. If you have had problems doing this with any plane, maybe you could describe the plane and what difficulty you had with it. I am fully confident that I could get a square end using my blue stanley handyman that is normally reserved for planing the bottom of old doors that are full of grit. If you have a Holtey that you can't get a square end with, I'll be glad to set up my stanley for you and send it in trade .

Derek's article talks plenty about the experience of using the different planes, yes, even as the blades get wear. He also mentions the need for an outside fence for this plane and other similarly handled planes, which I hadn't thought of, and which makes me more likely to stick with the LAJ that serves me very well in this role (even though Derek thinks it too light for the task) .
