Re: The Veritas Shooting Plane - Reviewed

Charles Stanford
Your reviews more or less become self-fulfilling because for someone else to challenge your review, in what amounts to real time, they would have to go out and purchase the tool itself, first -- an expenditure of funds with which you don't appear burdened. So your review is posted in the first few days of market release (if not pre-release) of the tool in question when probably less than two dozen planes have been sold and shipped to independent purchasers. This front-running is a bit disturbing along with the general lack of appearance of being a bona fide independent purchaser/reviewer with a bona fide need and bona fide expectations for the tool in question.

Your 'review' also presumably follows the input that you lent during development and prototyping and so ultimately becomes nothing more than a validation of your own, earlier input into the process. If you wrote a 'bad' review (you never do) you would be criticising your own earlier work it appears to me.

What, exactly, is the purpose behind reviews being timed the way they usually are? Is this just a coincidence? A munificent and charitable gesture on your part? Are there any other posted reviews on this plane by anybody else? I find it amazing that as a man with a professional practice, a husband, father (?), member of your community in Perth, worshipping community, etc. that you have no other commitments that prevent you from consistently getting your reviews done and posted to a half dozen forums at least and "on time," almost as if you considered them to be a professional commitment. Are they? The fact that these things hit every major woodworking forum on the same day and within the same hour in itself seems odd.
