the only valid reason I can imagine to use quartered oak for a side is if one is reproducing Period English furniture. Otherwise it would seem to have little merit for this application. I think the only reason the English used it is that it enabled the construction of very thin sides. hardly an issue on a small drawer, but a big weight saver on a large drawer.
