I use a meco for welding aircraft tubing, which is what most bike stuff is. I used a MAPP torch to make the red rack, but had I had the meco at the time, I would probably have used it. I also have TIG, but that is a whole other level of comitment, and easily the hardest craft thing I have ever self-taught. Does not seem to be too hard to learn from others, but very hard to self teach. Everyone who works at Bike Friday, has to make their own frame. So being spoon fed the techniques on proven, and pre-set gear seems doable.

I use my forge to heat treat, but a meco would be good, and I intend to try it also. The heat is more directible, which has it's uses.

Is the boat thing the actual pannier you are making, or just a sample of the rib work?
