Subject:
sort of a lefty contemplating a right-handed bench

Simon St.Laurent - Dryden, NY
It's been a long time since I posted here, but I'm finally building a few things again instead of just thinking about it. With two kids often asleep when I want to work, and a basement shop, I'm suddenly finding quiet a lot more necessary. I'm shifting over to hand tools as much as I can.

One challenge in this - which was also a challenge in power tools - is that I'm left-handed. I'm reasonably ambidextrous, mostly winding up lousy at a variety of tasks with both hands.

With the power tools there weren't a lot of opportunities to choose alternative tools or setups. With hand tools, it seems like I have a chance - at least before I set vises up with a workbench or buy tools beyond the basics - to choose which way to go.

My guess is that the path of least resistance is to go with a right-handed bench, so I don't have to mirror setups. I'll have to practice more to get things done that way, and resist the occasional urge to switch hands, but the tools and instruction are easier to find.

Anyone have an opinion? Especially lefties with a left-handed bench? Or righties who somehow wound up with a left-handed bench?

Thanks!
