In the early 18th century the taper went the other way, smaller toward the bolster. Later in the century, the mortise chisel was pretty flat for a while before becoming thicker at the bolster. I guess the Chester County makers were able to deal with these tools.
I think Bill did a rather presentable job for a guy who was thinking about giving up on the mortise chisel just a few days ago.
